Majority of women’s medieval fashions come from the mid-fourteenth century onwards. There was a change in women’s clothing from 1340, move from flat, draped garments belted for shape to the cutting of curved pieces with more complex construction to fit the body—the beginning of tailoring. One of the most elegant inventions of the Middle Age is the open surcoat, a garment with an open bodice and a skirt that trailed to the ground. Materials used in the middle ages were woolen cloth, fur, linen, cambric, silk, and the cloth of silver or gold. Clothing had tended to reflect one’s place in society, the type of dress or gown you wore determined your social status - a Peasant, Wench, Servant, Noblewoman, or Princess?
